For years, "we have backups" was a reasonable answer to the ransomware threat — get hit, restore, move on. Attackers adapted. Modern ransomware now hunts for and encrypts or deletes your backups first, specifically so you can't recover and have to pay. That changes the game: a backup that's reachable from your network is a backup the ransomware can destroy. Surviving ransomware in 2026 means having backups it can't touch. Here's how.
The 3-2-1 rule (and why it still anchors everything)
The foundational backup principle is simple and still correct:
- 3 copies of your data
- on 2 different types of media
- with 1 copy off-site
This protects against the ordinary failures — a dead drive, a lost device, a fire or flood that takes out one location. It's the baseline every business should meet, and many still don't. But on its own, classic 3-2-1 doesn't fully address ransomware, because if all three copies are reachable from the network, ransomware can encrypt all three.
The ransomware upgrade: immutable and offline copies
To make backups ransomware-resistant, you add two properties:
Immutability. An immutable backup can't be altered or deleted for a set retention period — not by you, not by an administrator, and not by ransomware that's compromised your credentials. Even if an attacker gets full access, they can't encrypt or erase an immutable copy. Many modern backup systems and cloud backup targets support immutability, and it's one of the single most important defenses against ransomware.
An offline / air-gapped copy. A backup that is physically or logically disconnected from the network can't be reached by ransomware spreading across it. This is the modern version of the "1 off-site copy" — not just off-site, but out of reach. The principle people summarize as "3-2-1-1-0": the extra 1 is an offline/immutable copy, and the 0 is zero errors on recovery testing.
Put together: you want multiple copies, at least one off-site, with at least one immutable and/or offline copy that ransomware fundamentally cannot alter. That last copy is what you recover from when everything reachable has been encrypted.
Testing: the part everyone skips
A backup you've never tested is a guess. The reason "0 errors on tested recovery" is part of the modern rule is that untested backups fail constantly — they were misconfigured, they stopped running months ago, or they can't actually be restored when you try. The time to discover a backup doesn't work is during a test, not during a ransomware incident. Regular, verified recovery testing is what turns "we have backups" into "we can actually recover."
